Jurassic World Dominion is tracking for a massive opening weekend at the box office.
Universal Pictures’ highly-anticipated Jurassic World sequel is set to hit theaters in less than a month. The film, which will be the conclusion of the trilogy that began with Colin Trevorrow’s 2015 film, and continued with J.A. Bayona’s 2018 film, Fallen Kingdom is shaping up to be one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters at the box office.
According to long range tracking from Box Office Pro, the new film is tracking to hit between $165 million and $205 million. These high numbers indicate that Universal Pictures’ franchise originally based on Michael Crichton’s books is one of their biggest tentpoles.
The previous two films grossed $1.670 billion and $1.310 billion respectively at the worldwide box office. Although the film may experience some competition from Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick, which also boasts some nostalgic value as well as enthusiastic critical reception, the popularity of the Jurassic World franchise will likely lead the film to further box office glory.
Why Jurassic World is Universal’s Star Wars
If Fast & Furious is their Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that it’s the contemporary blockbuster franchise that continues to bring in audiences for new chapters, then Jurassic World is their Star Wars, given that the franchise has multi-generational appeal, as well as nostalgic value. Ironically, the film’s director Colin Trevorrow was originally set to direct Episode IX, which he inevitably departed, but still received story credit for The Rise of Skywalker.
Because of that multi-generational appeal, this upcoming sequel will likely bring in audiences that were alive when Steven Spielberg’s iconic Jurassic Park hit theaters in 1993 as well as younger audiences that have grown up on the Jurassic World films. It’s safe to say that the film will be one of the biggest box office success stories of this coming summer moviegoing season.
