Nicholas Hoult is looking fresh as Lex Luthor! James Gunn reveals a new image of the star during production of Superman for his character’s 85th anniversary.
While fans have been most positive regarding the cast of Superman, the one confusing spot that remains in many fans’ minds is Nicholas Hoult. While most seem to agree that he is a great actor in his own right, his characters have often been on the soft and nerdy side, leaving many to wonder why James Gunn cast him as the dastardly and daring Lex Luthor.
These worries have been slightly alleviated with the release of the trailer for Superman, which gave fans their first official look at Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. However, James Gunn has continued to be stingy with any images of the supposed big bad of the reboot. Though much like Ebenezer Scrooge having a change of heart during Christmas time, Gunn himself has decided to be generous during the holiday that is Lex Luthor’s 85th anniversary, gifting fans a new look at Hoult as the villain.
Nicholas Hoult’s Future As Lex Luthor
Many fans believe that Superman will set the stage for major players going into the future of the DC Universe, with Lex Luthor being the center of much of this speculation. James Gunn, predictably, has stayed mostly silent on this issue. However, it seems as though Nicholas Hoult has his own thoughts on the prospect. When asked about his future as the character at Megacon in Orlando earlier this month, the star revealed he has high hopes for continuing as the villain.
“There’s so much I want to do with Lex,” Hoult explained during his exclusive panel. “I hope to play that character for a while.”
As of right now, Superman is the only project in which Nicholas Hoult is confirmed to appear as Lex Luthor. However, it’s more likely than not he would reprise his role if a sequel is greenlit. It’s also possible that Hoult appears in other projects across the DC Universe, such as Waller or The Authority, as both projects are likely set to focus on grey morality and political subterfuge.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
