Rob Liefeld Clarifies His Controversial ‘Deadpool 3’ Comments

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has taken the opportunity to clarify his recent comments regarding the status of Deadpool 3 which sparked controversy amongst fans.

Last week, Liefeld aired out his frustrations towards Marvel Studios for the lack of movement on Deadpool 3. The creator behind the merc with the mouth also claimed that Deadpool was not part of Marvel Studios’ plans for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking with io9, the comic book artist has now clarified his comments, reiterating that Deadpool 3 is not happening at the moment while also speaking on his frustration towards the reaction to his previous statements.

“Do I know that there is no movement on a Deadpool 3 right now? I know that. Yes. And does that worry me? No. Not at all. What I did was I answered a question honestly. And what I learned this week is just lie. Just tell people everything is lollipop and unicorns and rainbows and you’ll be better off in your life because people want to be lied to. Just because some guy goes, ‘Yeah, We’re still moving along’ that’s code for ‘There’s nothing to see here.'”

Liefeld also opened up regarding his personal experience with the film industry, adding that because Marvel has not yet dated Deadpool 3, he doesn’t believe we can expect the film any time soon.

“Regardless of whatever inside perspective I may have, what I do know is that until a movie is put on a schedule, it’s not taken seriously. And what people don’t like is that I have assessed the schedule for the next, give or take, five years and I don’t see Deadpool on it. [So] I don’t see that it can arrive earlier than that.”

Marvel Studios unveiled their slate for Phase 4 and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Unfortunately for fans of the R-rated superhero, Deadpool did not appear to be a part of their plans despite Disney’s then-recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which returned Fox’s rights to the X-Men characters back to Marvel. While Disney has assured fans that Marvel Studios is working on a way to bring Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Ryan Reynolds having previously confirmed that he is indeed working on a third installment with the house of mouse, Deadpool’s future at Disney remains unknown.

Here is the official synopsis for Deadpool 2:

Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Directed by David Leitch from a script written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds, the film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.
