Original Hellboy actor Ron Perlman still hopes to return for a third film in the film series launched by director Guillermo del Toro.

Perlman recently opened up about why he opted to not return for the 2019 Hellboy reboot, however, speaking with Comicbook.com, the actor revealed part of him still hopes to reunite with the Mexican filmmaker for another installment to the series.

“There’s always a little ember, that lives deep within me, that says maybe one day Guillermo will wake up and go, ‘You know what? Fu-ck, we need to finish this trilogy,” Perlman said.

But it doesn’t seem like fans should get their hopes up as not even Perlman is optimistic about the prospects of returning for another outing as Big Red.

“But, that’s where we were, one film away from finishing,” the Hellboy actor said. “But then, every time I see how busy he is and what he’s engaging himself in, it doesn’t seem like it’s realistic. It doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to happen, but that doesn’t prevent me from living in hope.”

As for the 2019 reboot, which featured Stranger Things actor David Harbour succeeding him in the role, Perlman admits he still has not seen the new film.

“I spent enough time immersing myself in the world of Hellboy that it was something I had no curiosity for,” Perlman said.

The Hellboy reboot featuring Harbour in the role ultimately became both a critical and commercial failure. The film was panned by both fans and critics, managing only $44 million at the worldwide box office. Earlier this year, Harbour explained he feels that fans’ affinity for del Toro’s version of the character resulted in the film underperforming.

Here is the official synopsis for David Harbour’s Hellboy:

Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.

Directed by Neil Marshall from a script co-written by character creator Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby, and Christopher Golden, Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, with Daniel Dae Kim.
