Ben Reilly is finally headed to the small screen! A batch of set photos from the production of Spider-Man Noir give fans a new look at Nicolas Cage outside of his suit.
Fans have gotten hype about the Spider-Man Noir series ever since set photos first dropped showing the costume Nicolas Cage would be wearing as the titular hero. Many believed it to be a truly faithful adaptation of a comic that was seen as having no chance of making it to live-action. However, that doesn’t mean the series is without its changes, such as changing the hero’s identity from Peter Parker to Ben Reilly due to the reported violence in the project.
These changes grow even more apparent in new Spider-Man Noir set photos released by JustJared. They show off Nicolas Cage chowing down on a hotdog as Ben Reilly, a staple of Spider-Man adaptations. However, his outfit suggests that the suggest will be leaning a lot harder into the character’s civilian life as a private eye than the original comics and animated adaptations.
Spider-Man Noir’s Tonal Balancing Act
The dissidence between superhero and civilian life shown in these set photos permeates throughout the entirety of Spider-Man Noir. It’s clear that Nicolas Cage will be embracing the grounded, over the top detective persona of Ben Reilly from these set photos. However, it’s also being reported that the hero will face off against over-the-top villains in the series such as Silvermane and Sandman.
It’s not an exaggeration to say the future of the webslinger on television rests on the shoulders of Nicolas Cage and Spider-Man Noir. The series has reportedly caused a rift to grow between Spider-Verse helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Sony Pictures, giving that wing of projects no true leader like the animated and film divisions. Though given Ben Reilly’s history with replacing Peter Parker in gritty reboots, it’s likely fans shouldn’t bet the farm on this being a massive success.
