After the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, many fans were calling for the release of the director’s cut for 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was another film that suffered from heavy interference by Warner Brothers. Two years later, Suicide Squad director David Ayer teases that his cut of the film may finally see the light of day.

The original Suicide Squad movie was widely considered a failure upon its release. In the years that followed much of this was attributed to interference from executives at Warner Bros. and its DC division, with Ayer claiming that the theatrical cut didn’t resemble his original vision for the film. The poor reception of the film led to Ayer being replaced when it came time for a sequel, with James Gunn writing and directing The Suicide Squad, which premiered in 2021.

Despite his history with DC, David Ayer has previously stated his support for James Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie while continuing to push for his own cut to finally come to light. Ayer has also teased on Twitter that this relationship between the two may actually be what gets the Ayer Cut released:

“I spoke to [Gunn] a while ago. All with patience. He has the right to put together his new universe before visiting the past. Cheer up. Good things are coming,” Ayer wrote on Twitter.

It’s currently unknown when or if the Ayer Cut would be released. If it does, it will likely be categorized under the “Elseworlds” banner of films, which includes any projects not canon to the main DC Universe being constructed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Current projects in this category include Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman: Part II.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
