Too silly even for a clown!

Zack Snyder Justice League David Ayer Brian Azzarello Jared Leto Suicide Squad Joker

Jared Leto’s version of the Joker in Suicide Squad has long been a punchline in the comic book community for horrible live0action adaptations of characters. Now even director David Ayer admits that the design went a bit too far in one area.

Suicide Squad has been embroiled in controversy since before it was released. From studio interference, to a horrible reception on release and, perhaps the film’s most well-known controversy, the infamous portrayal Leto gave as Joker in the film. While Ayer largely stands behind his original creative vision for the film, it was recently revealed on Twitter that he regrets the “Damaged” forehead tattoo that he gave the Joker int he film:

“It was Joker trolling Batman after getting his teeth punched in by him,” Ayer posted . “It’s the one aesthetic choice I wish I hadn’t made. Caught a lot of smoke for it obviously.”

Ayer hasn’t been a stranger to sharing details about his Suicide Squad film on Twitter. Recently, Ayer teased discussions about his cut of the film releasing under James Gunn’s management at DC Studios. Following his post about the regret for the forehead tattoo, Ayer also revealed a brand new look at Joker from the film, which can be seen below:

It’s currently unknown when or if the Ayer Cut would be released. If it does, it will likely be categorized under the “Elseworlds” banner of films, which includes any projects not canon to the main DC Universe being constructed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Current projects in this category include Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman: Part II.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
