Not everyone is as sour on Madame Web as Dakota Johnson. Sydney Sweeney recently spoke about how reaction to the film’s box office failure and if she’d ever return to the world of spandex.
Madame Web will go down as a truly historic failure, not just for Sony Pictures, but for superhero movies in general. The film was received so bad that even star Dakota Johnson was trashing during the press tour. The studio is now even reconsidering its entire plan for its Spider-Man universe.
However, it seems Madame Web wasn’t the worst experience for everyone involved. When asked how she felt about the film flopping at the box office, Sydney Sweeney admitted that she doesn’t worry about what’s out of her control. In fact, she’s grateful for the film because of the connections she made along the way.
“The movie is such a large movie with so many people involved,” Sweeney told GQ in a recent interview. “I was just hired as an actor and happy to bring to life a character that my little cousins are excited about. There’s no outcome I can control on a film like that, especially when I’m not a producer. You sign up for whatever happens and you take the ride.”
“To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there,” she continued. “Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
Unlike Madame Web, Anyone But You was a runaway success, managing enough at the box office to warrant a rerelease with new content. The project seemingly opened a whole new world to Sydney Sweeney’s career, in contrast to it potentially ending Dakota Johnson’s time as a leading woman. Perhaps the only true lesson that can be learned from Sony’s Spider-Man failures is that circumstances are only as good as you make them.
Could Sydney Sweeney Return To The Marvel Universe?
While it’s all but guaranteed that Madame Web won’t be getting a sequel, that doesn’t mean Sydney Sweeney can’t return in a different project. The actress has been open about how much she loves Marvel and its characters, making her the prime candidate for her own Spider-Man spin-off, especially given her star power.
When asked in the same interview whether she’d return as Julia Carpenter in a Madame Web sequel or potential Spider-Woman movie, Sydney Sweeney seemed relatively open to the idea, stating “I think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to.”
Interestingly, Julia Carpenter’s biggest role in the comics was in Secret Wars. It was during that event that she made her first appearance as Spider-Woman. With how massive of a flop Madame Web was, it’s possible Marvel pulls Sydney Sweeney into the MCU through the next Avengers film, giving her a chance to helm her own franchise.
