Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi teased the plans that the MCU has for Hercules.
Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder was not as highly-acclaimed as its predecessor, Ragnarok. The films, both directed by Taika Waititi, received different responses from critics, with the 2017 film receiving acclaim for being a fresh take on the God of Thunder, while the newest film was widely criticized for its humor and an uneven tone. The film still had its fans, many of which were left excited at the mid-credits scene that introduced Hercules (Brett Goldstein).
During a Q&A during a screening for the film, Taika Waititi was asked about what the mid-credits scene for Hercules may entail in the future. To which he responded with the following, teasing some MCU project that he likely won’t be involved with:
“And then [Louis D’Esposito?] is like, we’re gonna introduce Hercules, and um, that made no sense to me, I didn’t even know that was a character in Marvel, but um, apparently it is, and um… It was good, I know it’s opening up a whole new thing, uh, which I won’t be invited to come and be a part of, but I’m happy for everyone who loves Greek Gods.”
Hercules v Thor: Dawn of Thunder?
Taika Waititi’s comments regarding the MCU’s plans for Hercules are quite interesting. When you factor in the fact that around last month, numerous titles were trademarked for Marvel Studios, one of those was Hercules: Rise of the Gods. Whether or not this is referring to a new film or TV series remains unknown, but this trademark was also listed alongside now-confirmed titles such as Captain America: New World Order, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
