Taika Waititi Says ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Almost Had A Jesus Cameo

That would've been insane.

Taika Waititi revealed that he had plans to include a cameo by Jesus Christ in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Earlier this week, Marvel Studios released Thor: Love and Thunder onto Disney Plus. The film hit theaters two months ago, and remains one of the more divisive films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some praised the film for its emotional beats and signature Taika Waititi quirkiness, others criticized it for tonal inconsistency among other things. Based on numerous comments made by Waititi, there were many elements of the film that were left on the cutting room floor, along with some ideas that didn’t make it passed the idea phase. However, perhaps his most controversial idea was a planned cameo by Jesus Christ.

Thor Odinson, meet Jesus Christ?

Taika Waititi was interviewed by BBC Radio 1, along with Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson. There apparently was a scene in the new Thor film planned in which Valkyrie mentions a “God of Carpentry,” which would’ve led to an appearance by Jesus Christ. Waititi explained as follows:

“There was supposed to be a cutaway to you-know-who. Big J.”

For obvious and understandable reasons, the idea to include a cameo by Jesus Christ in Thor: Love and Thunder was kept an idea, and nothing else. Although Marvel Studios seemingly allowed Taika Waititi some creative freedom on the film, given his eccentric vision, it’s no surprise that some of the ideas would’ve been deemed a bit too “out there” or controversial to put into fruition. Besides, one can only imagine the backlash amongst certain religious groups, which is something that Disney would prefer to avoid.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor sequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
