Could The Batman join the DC Universe? Director Matt Reeves gives his thoughts on if Robert Pattinson could be the mainline Caped Crusader.

With The Batman sequel once more suffering delays, fans of the Dark Knight have had to keep their minds occupied somehow. This has led to widespread discussion on if or should Robert Pattinson should join the main continuity of the DC Universe to become Batman across from David Corenswet’s version of Superman and the broader Justice League.

The conversation has gotten so big that the question has even reached the desk of The Batman director Matt Reeves. During an appearance at the Golden Globes, Reeves was asked if there was any chance for Robert Pattinson’s incarnation of the World’s Greatest Detective could find his way into the DC Universe. The director played rather coy, simply stating it comes down to whether it makes sense or not for the story.

“Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” Reeves explained to Josh Horowitz. “What’s been great is there was a story that I wanted to tell that we’re calling The Epic Crime Saga which is the thrust of what we wanted to do. It’s been important to me to be able to play that out. James and Peter have been really, really great about that and they’re letting us do that.”

“What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now except that my head is down now about getting The Batman Part II shooting and to make it something special which is, of course, the most important thing.”

Is Robert Pattinson Joining The DC Universe?

Given how popular The Batman has been, it seems almost inevitable that Robert Pattinson would join the mainline DC Universe as it enters a new era with the reboot. However, it seems things may not be so sure. While Matt Reeves himself didn’t take a firm stance on the possibility, James Gunn was rather candid in his own interview with Josh Horowitz last month. The director stated plainly that, while he did contemplate bringing Pattinson into the DC Universe, he is committed to telling Elseworlds stories with the upcoming incarnation of the franchise.

It also begs the question of if Robert Pattinson would even fit into the DC Universe. It’s already been confirmed a Teen Titans film is in production, suggesting at least one Robin is old enough to have been with Batman and moved on. Even discarding James Gunn’s stated plans for The Brave and The Bold, there’s been no hint by Matt Reeves that that Robin has had any presence in The Batman presence, seemingly deconfirming this idea from the jump.
