The Marvels is set to be Brie Larson’s grand return as Captain Marvel in the MCU, and she’s joined by some friends. The film receives its official MPAA rating ahead of Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris’ big screen debut.
While The Marvels is certainly set to break barriers in the MCU with its three female leads of Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Velanni, it certainly isn’t breaking any rules. The film recently received its official rating by the MPAA, the Motion Picture Association of America, which has rated the film as PG-13.
This shouldn’t come as a shock considering every other MCU film to date has been rated as PG-13 by the MPAA, with The Marvels being no exception. However, even among the flock it seems to be playing it safe, only containing “action/violence and brief language” as opposed to other projects like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that feature warnings of “drug references” and “strong language”, including the MCU’s first “F-bomb”.
The talent behind The Marvels
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
