Clancy Brown, best known to fans as voicing Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe, will play crime boss Sal Maroni in HBO Max’s The Batman spin-off series about The Penguin.
Production on eight-episode DC Studios drama began this week.
Previous actors who played Maroni onscreen include Eric Roberts in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and David Zayas on the Gotham television show.
Additional cast on The Penguin include Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell.
Who is attached to the Penguin series?
The Penguin is set in the same universe as The Batman and sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as the villainous Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. Cristin Milioti recently joined the show’s cast as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Gotham city mob boss Carmine Falcone, played by John Turturro in The Batman.
Mare Of Easttown helmer Craig Zobel is directing the first two episodes of The Penguin, with Lauren LeFranc (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck) overseeing the project as its writer and showrunner. Colin Farrell is an executive producer on the series alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark.
“We are very, very soon going to start shooting The Penguin with Colin. That is super exciting… There are some other things we have planned too,” Reeves previously said. “The BatVerse of what we’re doing has me very, very excited, and I’m very passionate about it… There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.”
The Batman opened in theaters last year, earning 770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the firth highest-grossing movie of the year for now. Reeves is working on a sequel to the Warner Bros. project and currently writing its script alongside Mattson Tomlin.
