Vincent D’Onofrio Reveals Marvel Shares Kingpin Rights With Sony Pictures

Is Kingpin in trouble?

Is Kingpin trapped? Vincent D’Onofrio speaks on the current situation between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures when it comes to the rights of Wilson Fisk.

It seems Marvel fans haven’t been able to escape Vincent D’Onofrio in recent years, with the Kingpin appearing almost yearly in Disney Plus shows. However, it seems the studio isn’t free to use Wilson Fisk wherever they want. When asked if he’d appear in the animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man alongside Charlie Cox, D’Onofrio admitted it was tricky with Sony Pictures involved.

“I’m going to transparently say this: You know the whole Marvel-Sony thing, right?” D’Onofrio explained at Fan Expo Boston 2024. “So there are characters – Marvel characters invented by Marvel, written by Marvel – that are caught in between Marvel and Sony. And so it takes a long time for them to figure out who is doing what.”

“I just never really know where [Kingpin can show up]. My character is in that kind of situation, unlike Charlie [Cox]’s. So I don’t know, it’s part of the deal when it comes to playing Kingpin.’

This certainly makes sense, given Kingpin was the main villain in Sony Pictures’ first Spider-Verse film. Given the character’s lack of presence in animated Spider-Man media, it’s likely Marvel is unable to use Wilson Fisk outside of live-action, which is why Vincent D’Onofrio remains so prolific as the character despite not dipping into the animated side of their multiverse.

Vincent D’Onofrio’s Future As Kingpin

Despite his rights being caught between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, Vincent D’Onofrio still has a bright future as Kingpin. Wilson Fisk is already set to appear in the first two seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, building off the character’s last appearance where it was announced that he would be running for mayor of New York City.

Vincent D’Onofrio also has his eyes set on the big screen. The Kingpin actor has previously expressed his desire to face off against Spider-Man. This would be the ultimate collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures when it comes to the rights of Wilson Fisk. However, whether it comes true is yet to be seen.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere in March 2025 on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
