Is this the end of the MonsterVerse? It’s been confirmed that Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard won’t be returning to helm the film’s sequel.
Godzilla X Kong has perhaps been the biggest sleeper hit of 2024. The film has rocketed past all expectations, becoming the second highest-grossing project in the MonsterVerse and handily obtaining a sequel. Despite this, it seems not all is well in paradise, as it’s now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that director Adam Wingard won’t be returning to the franchise.
Adam Wingard was the director of both Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla Vs Kong. While he’s said he had more stories to tell in the MonsterVerse, he also indicated his desire to take a break from giant Kaiju battles, with his next project Onslaught set to shoot with A24 this fall. With Legendary Pictures ready to go all-in on the franchise’s newest wave of success, they’ve opted to replace Wingard rather than wait for him to wrap up his upcoming project.
The New Talent Behind The MonsterVerse
While no director has been chosen to replace Adam Wingard for the Godzilla X Kong sequel, the project has already started development. Legendary Pictures has brought on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham to pen the script.
It’s possible that Michael Dougherty could return to the franchise to helm the Godzilla X Kong sequel following Adam Wingard’s departure. Dougherty was the director of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and helped write the story for Godzilla Vs. Kong. Though, whoever Legendary Pictures gets to continue the MonsterVerse, they’ll certainly have some kaiju-sized shoes to fill.
