Blue Beetle actor Xolo Maridueña revealed that he didn’t even audition for the titular role in the DCEU film.

Amidst all the shakeups at Warner Bros. Discovery regarding the future of the DCEU, the upcoming film Blue Beetle featuring Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña is still set to be released next summer. The film, which will be the first modern live-action comic book film centered on a Latino superhero wrapped principal photography, and is currently in post-production.

The opportunity of a lifetime.

Xolo Maridueña spoke with Backstage magazine about how he ended up winning the role. As it turns out, all it took was with Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto believing in the Cobra Kai actor’s talents.

“Heading into Blue Beetle, I hadn’t auditioned. I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be booked just off of the director believing in me and being like, ‘This is the guy; it has to be this guy.’ Even now, it’s sometimes really hard to wrap my head around that idea that, you know, they have seemingly so much riding on this movie—in this, hopefully, series of movies. How could they not audition me? The only thing that I could think to sum it up to was like: Oh, they liked Cobra Kai, so they probably want something similar to Miguel…. And that couldn’t have been further from the truth. I remember doing the chemistry reads and having our producers and the director be like, ‘No.’ And I can’t say anything else about the character. But I think in that conversation, they were like, ‘You will learn that it’s not the same thing.’ And honestly, that’s super helpful.”

The upcoming DCEU film will be one of four major releases in 2023 from the franchise. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will also be hitting theaters next year.

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes made his first appearance in the pages of 2006’s Infinite Crisis #5. A live-action version of Jaime made an appearance in the Superman prequel series Smallville, with Jaren Brandt Bartlett playing the DC Comics hero.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer the film stars Xolo Maridueña, Susan Sarandon, Raoul Trujillo, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo and Harvey Guillén. The film is being produced by John Rickard with Zev Foreman, Walter Hamada and David Siegel serving as executive producers.

Blue Beetle is currently set to be released on August 18th, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
