Shazam! star Zachary Levi has shared his thoughts on James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios hiring.
Zachary Levi made his debut as the adult, superpowered version of Asher Angel’s Billy Batson in 2019’s Shazam! before reprising the role for its sequel Fury of the Gods, which is currently slated to hit theaters in 2023. Which Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Universe now in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, Levi’s future as Shazam is currently uncertain.
During a recent appearance at Comic-Con Portugal, Zachary Levi praised the new DC Universe regime and shared that he hopes to continue playing Shazam. “I’m sure most of you know who James Gunn is, because he’s made all kinds of incredible movies and television shows, like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and stuff,” Levi told fans in attedance. “He’s one of my bosses now, which is dope. Also, he’s a friend of mine, so that makes him even cooler.”
“And then, Peter Safran, who is his partner, is my producer — he produces the movie Shazam,” Levi continued. “So your question is, ‘If those are my two bosses, is there a plan and a future for Shazam?’ I would say ‘Yeah, I would hope so. I would hope so.’ Because those are my friends, and if they don’t have a plan, then they are not my friends anymore. No, sir.”
Back in 2019, Zachary Levi revealed that James Gunn was the one who suggested him for the role of Shazam to Peter Safran. Levi had a history with Gunn as he auditioned for Star-Lord in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, losing the role to Chris Pratt.

In addition to Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are also currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies set to hit theaters next year. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
