Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reunite in this official image from Thor: Love and Thunder.
In about two months, Marvel Studios is set to release their upcoming sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder. Academy Award-winning writer/director Taika Waititi returns to helm the latest standalone film centered on Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder following their critically-acclaimed collaboration on Thor: Ragnarok. Now, a former figure from the franchise is set to make her long-awaited return for the first time in nine years: Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster.
Back in the summer of 2019, Marvel Studios announced during their San Diego Comic-Con presentation that Natalie Portman would return for Thor: Love and Thunder to wield Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor, directly inspired by Jason Aaron’s comics. As referenced in Taika Waititi’s irreverent 2017 film, Chris Hemsworth’s protagonist acknowledges that he and Jane have since broken up, which some fans have attributed to Portman’s dissatisfaction with her experience on the previous film.
Several years later, both Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have reunited for Thor: Love and Thunder, and a new image from the film has been revealed, courtesy of Empire. Here, we see the duo reunited, and it certainly feels good!
Taika Waititi revealed that when it comes to this surprise reunion between the two exes, Thor himself finds himself in one of the most complicated situations he’s faced so far:
“It’s been about eight years. She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindfuck for Thor.”
It’ll be exciting to see how both Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman pick up where they left off with their characters’ relationship in the film. In particular, to see how their dynamic will be portrayed under the direction of Taika Waititi is perhaps the most intriguing element of the new film.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
