Dwayne Johnson made an appearance as a presenter for the 95th Academy Awards this past weekend. During his walk down the red carpet, Johnson was able to reveal his thoughts on the critical backlash to his latest DC Comics movie Black Adam.
Black Adam crashed with critics on arrival, ending up with a 39% critic score Rotten Tomatoes. This makes Black Adam the third lowest rated DC Extended Universe movie in history, trailing just ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. When asked his thoughts on Black Adam‘s reception, Johnson was quick to point out that the audience score was “in the 90s” and that “critics took a couple of shots. That’s just the business of it, though”. The full clip can be seen below:
Johnson’s comparison of Black Adam to a team that “wins championships” may also seem odd to many fans who followed the film as it struggled at the box office. While it’s unclear if James Gunn and Peter Safran departed ways with Johnson due to any of these factors, it is clear that the two DC Studios heads want to take the DCU into a new direction. So while the hieracy of power in the DC universe did change as Johnson had been hoping for, it seemed to leave him and Black Adam behind in the same breath.
A new era for the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran are now in charge of DC’s film, television and animations efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing the company’s comic book-related assets under one roof. Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DCU while Safran is handling things that are related to business and production.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
