Production on the upcoming Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali has reportedly been delayed to 2023.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali dealt with a setback last week when it was announced that director Bassam Tariq departed the project, leaving the film without a director at the helm. The search for a new director is currently underway, while X-Men ’97 head writer Beau DeMayo was tapped to take another pass on the script, with a recent report claiming that there’s a complete page 1 rewrite planned.

Amidst the project’s setbacks, Blade was about two months away from principal photography beginning, and now it appears that production will be delayed. The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider shared the following, explaining that Mahershala Ali’s first headlining MCU film will be delayed due to the search for a new director:

Lizzie Hill, editor-in-chief at The Cosmic Circus corroborated this claim, although she heard that the production may be delayed to January 2023. BigScreenLeaks on Twitter also corroborated this report that Blade won’t begin production until at least the beginning of the next calendar year:

Will the release of Blade also get delayed?

As of right now, Marvel Studios currently has Blade set to hit theaters on November 3, 2023. With just a little over a year away from its supposed release, given that principal photography looks to be possibly delayed until early 2023, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it ultimately get delayed further down the Phase 5 slate to accommodate the production changes. Either way, fans may have to be a bit more patient before they finally see Mahershala Ali bring the character to life on the big screen.
