‘Man Of Steel’ Star Michael Shannon Almost Played Cable In ‘Deadpool 2’

Instead of Thanos, General Zod could've been Cable!

Man of Steel star Michael Shannon came close to playing Cable in Deadpool 2.

Josh Brolin was in the unique situation of being in two different Marvel movies in the same year. He first appeared in Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos, and also appeared in Deadpool 2 as Cable. However, another actor came pretty close to playing that role, and in a different timeline, Man of Steel star Michael Shannon could’ve played the role.

From Zod to Cable?

While promoting the movie Bullet Train, producer Kelly McCormick confirmed that Michael Shannon came close from being the latest actor to join the club of being part of both DC and Marvel, jumping from Man of Steel as General Zod to Deadpool 2 as Cable:

“He actually almost was Cable. Then there was some sort of hiccup conflict at the very last minute, and then we just ended up reconnecting on this one, and felt really lucky that this was the role for him. Because Josh [Brolin] was so good as Cable, I can’t even imagine [what that would have been like].”

It would’ve been interesting to see how Michael Shannon would’ve brought Cable to life in Deadpool 2. For one, seeing him in a more serious role in Man of Steel compared to taking part in an irreverent comic book film would’ve been quite the tonal whiplash for fans of both universes. But perhaps, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson would’ve made a self-aware joke about kneeling before Zod.

Cable was last seen in Deadpool 2. Here is the synopsis:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Directed by David Leitch from a script written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds, the film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.

Deadpool 2 is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Meanwhile, Man of Steel’s Michael Shannon is set to reprise his role as General Zod in The Flash.
