Production on the upcoming Star Wars Disney Plus series The Acolyte has reportedly been delayed.

Following the conclusion of the polarizing Star Wars Sequel Trilogy in 2019, Lucasfilm’s iconic franchise has since pivoted its focus away from theatrical releases to original series exclusively streaming on Disney Plus. This began with The Mandalorian, which was the flagship series of the service’s launch in November 2019, and has since expanded into new projects such as the final season of The Clone Wars, an original animated series in The Bad Batch, and the latest live-action original series, The Book of Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor are both set to debut on the service this year, and another one of the more intriguing new series in development comes from The Acolyte, which Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland will serve as showrunner for.

Although production on The Acolyte was originally set to begin earlier this year, a new report from The Illuminerdi claims that the series will begin production this October 2022, and scheduled to be completed by May 2023. This new Star Wars series is said to explore emerging Dark Side powers during the final days of the High Republic Era, which takes place about a century before the events of The Phantom Menace.

Along with showrunner Leslye Headland involved with The Acolyte, actor Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) is reportedly in talks to lead the Disney Plus Star Wars series, potentially as the titular character in question. Although we have very little information regarding the identity of their character, the prospect of this series showcasing a Dark Side Force User front-and-center is an exciting prospect.

Along with The Acolyte, Star Wars is also set to have production begin on Ahsoka, a series centered on the former Padawan of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) with Rosario Dawson reprising her role as seen in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. With production for both of these series looking to begin this year, 2023 is shaping up to be yet another exciting year for the galaxy far, far away on Disney Plus.
