Willem Dafoe poked fun at fans wanting him to play The Joker while hosting Saturday Night Live.

Hot off of his scene-stealing return as Norman Osborn AKA the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Willem Dafoe is riding pretty high. Making his triumphant return to the iconic role that he made famous in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the Academy Award-nominee hosted NBC’s Saturday Night Live with musical guest Katy Perry.

In his opening monologue, Willem Dafoe talked about returning to New York City, the early years of his career, and one of his signature qualities as an actor: his extremely expressive face. With that specific quality in mind, he also addressed perhaps one of comic book fans’ most-requested fan castings: Willem Dafoe as The Joker.

Here’s what Willem Dafoe said in his Saturday Night Live monologue poking fun at people wanting him to play The Joker:

“Look, I can’t help that I have an expressive face. I can’t control it! I don’t think about controlling it. I’m not one of those subtle actors like Nicolas Cage or Al Pacino. Maybe that’s why people come up to me and say, ‘You know what role you’d be perfect for? The Joker.’ Always nice to hear that you got the vibe of a sociopath.”

Interestingly enough, the Academy Award-nominee recently mentioned that he is not opposed to portraying a Joker imposter opposite Joaquin Phoenix in a future film. Anytime an actor is cast as the latest to portray such an iconic role, many fans would certainly approve of a character actor as acclaimed as Willem Dafoe portraying The Joker.

Although he is not expected to play the Joker anytime soon, Willem Dafoe can be seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here is the synopsis:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
