Actress Zazie Beetz reacts to the news that the upcoming Joker: Folie À Deux will be a musical.

Last week, it was officially confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures that Joaquin Phoenix would be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck in the sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux. The actor, who received an Academy Award for his performance in the 2019 film, will also be joined by Lady Gaga, who is expected to play Harley Quinn. The news certainly caught people by surprise, and some have really warmed up to it, including actress Zazie Beetz.

While promoting her new film Bullet Train, Zazie Beetz, who played Arthur Fleck’s neighbor Sophie in the original film, shared her thoughts about Joker: Folie A Deux being a musical in an interview with THR:

“(Laughs.) I actually think it makes wonderful sense. I wasn’t really surprised by that. Todd [Phillips] has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy. And I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me. I was going through a really, really difficult time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying by myself. And that was an expression that matched where I was at that moment. And so I can see Arthur, who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He’s the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me.”

Will Zazie Beetz return?

Given that Zazie Beetz’s character in Joker was left with an ambiguous fate, it is possible that she may return for an appearance in this sequel. However, since this looks to be focused on an entirely new dynamic, it wouldn’t be surprising if the character of Sophie isn’t included. Either way, Beetz is certainly intrigued by the prospect of Joker: Folie A Deux.

Here is the official synopsis for Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, while Joker: Folie A Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
